Hey, gang.
Just so I don't too far out in left field, I did a revision on a few of the
FAQs taking the suggestions that were offered. Does this version of seem to
be closer to the mark?
========================================
How does WP work?
Dang, we were afraid you were going to ask that. We're just the
lackeys typing documentation, but we can tell you what we DO know-PHP and an
SQL database, preferably MySQL, are two of the major components. You can
find detailed explanations from somebody who knows what they are talking
about in the SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS portion of the WP documentation package.
How much does it cost?
WP is published under the GNU General Public License, or GPL. You
can find out about the GNU GPL by visiting
http://www.gnu.org/copyleft/gpl.html. WordPress is distributed as free
software - source code, documentation, the whole thing. While you visit the
GNU website, you can learn more about the philosophy behind the GPL at
http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/philosophy.html.
However, you can find ways to donate directly to the developers through
purchasing something on their wish lists or by making direct donations. You
can also help in other ways, like contributing to the community by making
sandwiches and coffee for the volunteers working on the documentation.
Either that or you can write some hacks and be an active member that
supports expert and newbie alike.
How is WP related to other blogging applications?
WordPress was primarily inspired by Noah Grey's Greymatter
open-source web log and journal software. It is related to b2, sort of a
second cousin twice removed. Oh, and it's rumored to be a guy's son's
uncle's sister's Mother's brother's cousin's half step-sister's daughter's
Father-in-law's nephew and butler to a dude who created Blogger. Yeah, it's
hard to believe that they look so different, eh? You can use WP to post your
own stories, ideas, rants, reviews, links, and pictures of your toothless
Uncle Ernie at the wedding reception if you choose. Therefore, as you can
see, its functionality is similar to most blogging tools out there.
Why should I use WP?
Good question-you have a lot of them, don't you? Well, you should
check out our forums because there are many people who think that you should
use WP because it's a great tool, and it's getting better all the time. It's
easy to set up and run, and there is a great bunch of people around who are
willing to help you get started so you can enjoy your personal
web-publishing experience. Oh, yeah, we've also heard a rumor that 80% of
the members of MENSA are switching over to WP. At least we think they are.
Craig.
